The Deutscher Wachtelhund
The Wachtelhund is sometimes referred to as a “German Spaniel”.
Wachtelhunds are strong flushers, retrievers, and water dogs. They are a superb bird dog. In Europe, they are used for hunting hare, fox, and wild boar. Breeding for this type of hunting has produced the unique hound trait of giving tongue on the trail (yipping, barking, being vocal when trailing game). The Wacthelhund has also been bred to have a highly sensitive nose. This not only aids in hunting up game, but also creates a dog very skilled at bloodtrailing wounded game.
Wachtelhunds are very obedient and affectionate. They also have an intense desire to hunt and are best suited for the family that hunts frequently. Germans say the Wachtelhund "should only be in sportsmen's hands."
The Wacthelhund has been bred to hunt the thick brush of German forest, creating a sturdy dog, a bit low on leg. Wachtelhunds have traditionaly had their tails docked by a small amount. They have a spaniel-type coat that can vary in degree of curl from almost straight to very curly.
